SAMBALPUR: Gangadhar Meher University (GMU) is planning a major infrastructure boost following the sanction of Rs 27.50 crore to the institution under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA).
Deputy registrar of GMU, U C Pati, said, "We had applied for Rs 55 crore. The institution's first priority is to now construct new class rooms. Currently, the University has 19 departments and there are only 40 classrooms. Moreover, the institution is going to introduce four new courses - Sociology, Anthropology, Biotechnology and Library Science from this academic session. We require at least 30 more classrooms for this.
"
Also in the works are a student activity centre with a cafeteria and gym, separate common rooms for boys and girls, an administrative block and new staff quarters. "We will submit these proposals to the government once we receive the funds," added Pati.
He said, considering the progress of the works, the RUSA will sanction the remaining amount in the second phase. tnn
