Bhubaneswar: A day after Ashrita Senapati, studying MCA in a private college here allegedly committed suicide in her rented house in Acharya Vihar, the Saheed Nagar police on Wednesday arrested her boyfriend for allegedly abetting her extreme step.
The accused was identified as Satya Prakas Das, who works in the food and beverage unit of an IT company here. Police said Senapati had blamed Das for her death in her suicide note, which was seized from her room on Tuesday.
Senapati and Das, who belonged to Tihidi area in Bhadrak district, were in a relationship since 2014. However, fissures appeared in their relationship a few months ago. Das had been suspecting her of having developed a new relationship with another youth, a senior police officer said.
On Monday evening, Das visited Senapati’s rented home in Acharya Vihar. They had a heated argument in her room. Senapati unsuccessfully tried to convince Das that she was not in any relationship with anyone else.
“He assaulted her during their altercation. Injury marks were found on her face and eyes when we recovered her body. In her suicide note she mentioned that he thrashed her. This was the reason for her depression and subsequent suicide,” assistant commissioner of police Sanjeev Satpathy said.
