BHUBANESWAR: A team of medical surgeons at a private hospital here has performed a rare surgery and removed a football-size
tumour
, weighing about 4 kg, from the abdomen of a 60-year-old man.
The surgery that lasted three hours was performed on Pratap Kumar Satpathy from Athagarh. He was having severe abdominal pain and difficulty in breathing and swallowing for the past two months. The surgery was performed on Friday at BR Life Kalinga Hospital.
The hospital, using its advanced surgical technologies, performed this surgical resection and removed the tumour that was connected to multiple organs and tissue. The tumour was developing in the patient’s body for the past 30 years, a doctor said.
Dr Brundaban Nahak, surgical gastroenterologist at the hospital, said, “This was one of the complicated surgeries that was performed where the patient had a huge bony tumour measuring 30x30x30 cm.”
“We performed en bloc resection, which is a procedure of surgical
oncology
aiming to remove a tumour mass,” Nahak said.
He said such surgeries take about seven to eight hours on an average, but with the help of advanced surgical and clinical technologies and a well-trained medical team, it was completed in just three hours.
Dr Pradeep Kumar Mishra, senior consultant, general surgery, at the hospital said, “The gradual growth of the tumour resulted in creating grave complications for other organs attached in the body.”
