KENDRAPADA: The additional district and sessions judge of Jajpur sentenced 40-year-old Trilokyanath Sahoo, a farmer of Khandas village under Jajpur Sadar police station, to life imprisonment on Wednesday for intentionally running over his tractor on 24-year-old Bhimasen Mallick and another person on the agriculture field five years back.
Besides, the court also slapped a fine of Rs 15,000 on the convict for the murder and attempt to murder. He will have to serve 10 more months if he fails to pay the fine. Pronouncing the verdict, additional district and sessions judge Sunil Kumar Das convicted Sahoo to life imprisonment under Section 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) PC.
The victims — Bhimasen Mallick and Akshya Mallick — were harvesting groundnuts when the convict ran over them over with his tractor as a result of which Bhimasen died on the spot and Akshya sustained spinal cord injuries.
Upendra Mallick, the elder brother of the victim, lodged an FIR and alleged that his brother was intentionally killed. The convict had earlier abused and threatened to kill them saying they pilfered his harvested groundnuts. Police launched a probe and arrested Sahoo on charges of murder and attempt to murder.
The judge found Sahoo guilty after examining 14 witnesses, said public prosecutor Rajendra Prasad Nayak.
