Elderly man found living with wife’s corpse for days, dies after rescue

Jharsuguda: Police rescued a man living with the decomposed body of his wife for three to four days in Jharsuguda district on Friday evening. He died moments after being taken to hospital. Sub-divisional police officer (Brajarajnagar) Chintamani Pradhan said the decomposed body of Rukmini Bhoi, 55, was recovered from her home at Hanuman Mandir Pada in Sanjobgram under Orient police station limits. Her husband, Gobinda Bhoi, 61, who was found unconscious, was shifted to a hospital in Brajarajnagar, where he died shortly after treatment began.
Sources said Gobinda, a coal mine employee who retired last year, and his wife had no children. Neighbours said they had not seen them step out of the house for around four days.On Friday, Gobinda's sister-in-law came to visit them. After repeatedly knocking on the door, Gobinda eventually opened it, walked into the room where his wife's body was lying, and collapsed.Food was found cooked but untouched in the kitchen, and foul smell inside the house made entry difficult. Police were informed soon after, who then shifted Gobinda to hospital. After Gobinda's in-laws arrived, police completed necessary procedures. Cooked rice was found dried on the stove, and vomit was spotted near the room.Police are probing the cause of deaths and any possible foul play. A forensic team visited the spot and collected samples. The bodies were sent for postmortem examination, and further investigation is underway. "We are probing the case from all possible angles," Pradhan said. Police said the exact cause of deaths will be known only after they get the autopsy reports.
