BHUBANESWAR: The
Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday interrogated N Prabhakar Babu, director of Visakhapatnam-based Seven Hills Hospital, in connection with last year's alleged kidney sale racket in Cuttack.
On June 17, 2014, commissionerate of police arrested Babu after they found that a kidney transplant was conducted illegally at the hospital. He was later released on bail.
On May 28, ED took over the investigation to chase the money trail in the racket. "We strongly suspect some doctors of the hospital connived with middlemen to exploit poor people, who were lured to sell kidney," said an ED officer.
"We will not only probe the Cuttack case but also other kidney transplants consucted at Seven Hills. All persons arrested by commissionerate of police will be interrogated," the officer added.
Sarmistha Nayak along with her husband Dilip had convinced Namita Nayak of Cuttack to sell her kidney for Rs 5 lakh. However, she was paid only 50,000 after a surgery at the hospital. Police said the entire deal was allegedly made by Biswaranjan Khatua, a middleman, for Rs 25 lakh.
