Berhampur: The owner of a cinema hall was arrested on charges of cheating the proprietor of a film company in Mumbai of Rs 39 lakh about three years back.
Accused Rajesh Sharma (45), a resident of Rourkela, was arrested from his resident on Saturday based on a complaint lodged by Sarju Ramesh Chandra Shah, proprietor of the film company, SP (Berhampur) Saravana Vivek M said on Sunday.
He said the financial documents and mobile phone of the accused have been seized.
Police said as per the agreement made in 2022 between them, the complainant had installed advanced sound system in three screens in the cinema hall at Old Bus Stand area in Berhampur at a cost of Rs 39 lakh. Despite repeated requests, the accused did not make the payment.
All the bank cheques which he had issued were dishonoured in the absence of sufficient cash, Shah alleged.
Seeing no way out, Shah reported the matter at Berhampur town police station. Police said they registered a cheating case against the accused and after thorough investigation; he was arrested from his residence at Mahulapalli in Rourkela’s Plant Site police station limits.
During investigation, police also came to know that the accused was involved in at least seven cheque bounce cases earlier, said SP (Berhampur).
