BHUBANESWAR: A private tutor known for being a good samaritan jumped into the swirling Mahanadi river to save his student from drowning on Wednesday but ended up losing his life in a heart-wrenching incident in Kendrapada district.
The teacher identified as Saroj Kumar Das, 26, of Sankhapada village in Kendrapada district took 40 students from his coaching centre at Bidyadharpurpatana village under Mahakalapada police station to nearby Kantilo for a picnic.
Two other teachers also joined Saroj in the bus and the group in a jovial mood began their journey to the locally famous Nilamadhab temple early.
Some of the students went to the Mahanadi near the temple to take a bath, when one boy got swept into deeper waters.
“Everyone shouted for help, but sir without even thinking twice immediately jumped into the river and rescued the boy,” a witness said.
But Saroj got swept away by the strong undercurrent of the river. “While locals managed to bring out the student from the deep water, they could not save the teacher,” a local persons said.
Locals, along with rescue workers, traced Saroj downstream and immediately shifted him to a hospital in Kantilo, where doctors declared him dead.
