BHUBANESWAR: At least eleven persons were killed in separate road accidents across the state on Monday and Tuesday. A woman died when a private bus hit her scooter from behind on the Daya Bridge, on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday noon. Shailabala Devi (40), a native of Old Town, worked in a private hospital at Balipatan. She was on her way back home when the mishap took place.

Three more persons died in two separate accidents in Kendrapada district on the New Year. Two youths died when a Kendrapada-bound truck hit a two-wheeler at Kendupatana Chowk under heavy fog. The deceased were identified as Bramahananda Panda (26) of Belarapur village and Sudhir Lenka (23) of Chasakhandi village in Kendrapada district.
As irony would have it, one Sridhar Jena (30) of Derabis died after being hit by an unidentified vehicle at Panchupandav Chowk in Kendrapada district while digging the ground to erect a gate of the district Road Transport Office (RTO) for road safety week, on Tuesday.
Two youths were crushed to death under the wheels of a liquor-laden lorry near Gelpur High School under Bhadrak rural police limits on NH-5, the same afternoon. Police identified the duo as Debasis Mohanty (22) and Minaz Quadri (21) of Channapur and Permit Ghat respectively in Balasore district. They were hit by the truck around 1 pm while on their way to Bhubneswar. Debasis, who ran a mobile phones shop, celebrated his birthday on Tuesday while his friend Minaz was a mason by profession. Police have sized the vehicle and sent the bodies for post-mortem.
Similarly, at least four persons died and two others were injured in three separate accidents in western part of the state on Monday evening. While two bikers died in Jharsuguda district, one each was killed in Deogarh and Balangir districts.
Police said the two bikers, Jogendra Benia (18) and Sadhan Kishan (19), died on Monday afternoon following a collision with a coal-laden truck at Belpahar. The Orient police have registered a case.
