Berhampur: The premises of Bhanjanagar police station, one of the oldest in Ganjam district, resembles a huge garden with around 100 varieties of flowers, a children’s park in one corner and temple of Lord Ganesh. “The premises has been beautifully illuminated while the police station building has tricolour lights. The place looks more like a park than a police station,” said LN Kar of Bhanjanagar.The police station was beautified to make it public-friendly and reduce the suffering of victims who visit to lodge complaints, said IIC, Bhanjanagar police station, Jeevananand Jena. But now many visit to enjoy its beauty, he added.

He said the beautification drive was undertaken by utilising funds under Aam Police, contribution of police personnel and several residents of Bhanjanagar, while the forest department provided some decorative plants. “Around 100 people of the town have voluntarily donated the flower pots along with the plants,” he said. Currently, around 3,000 flower pots have been installed on the premises to enhance its beauty and fragrance.
He said two home guards have been engaged to look after the plants. Also, all staff, including the officers clean and water the plants from 9 am to 1 pm every Sunday, he said. SP (Ganjam) Subhendu Patra and sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Bhananagar, Deepk Mishra guided in the beautification drive.Jena said they have also planned to add more facilities in the reception centres by serving free tea to visitors and to make sitting arrangements. “The premises has been declared as the “no tobacco zone” and impose a fine Rs 500 on the offenders for their second offence. The fine is applicable to the staff too,” he said.
