BeMC to develop silk city’s drainage system

Berhampur: The Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has decided to develop the city’s drainage system to avoid inundation in some areas during rainy season.“The civic body has allotted Rs 10 crore for the preparation of a master plan for storm water drains for a compressive drainage system in the city in its annual budget of 2023-24,” BeMC mayor Sanghamitra Dalai said.The estimated cost for constructing a drainage system will be known only after the detailed project report is prepared,” BeMC commissioner J Sonal said. He added that an agency will be roped in for preparing the master plan in order to seek approval from the government and its implementation.The city has no master plan either for storm water drains or the sewerage network. For around 350km of roads, the city has only around 600km of storm water drains. The ideal figure of length of drains would be twice the road length, sources said. Due to the poor drainage system, the low-lying areas in the city inundate during the rainy season.Meanwhile, the BeMC has also proposed the rejuvenation and development of all water bodies within its jurisdiction with government grants. The entire work will be done at an estimated cost of Rs 82 crore. Around Rs 29 crore has been allotted for the development of 33 acres of Beda Bandh, Rs 11 crore for Haridakhandi pond and Rs 11 crore for Angla pond. Similarly, Rs 10.40 crore will be spent on Aina Bandh, sources said. Besides Rs 20 crore has been earmarked for developing 42 other ponds, sources added.The civic body has also proposed for construction of at least five shopping malls and market complexes at an estimated cost of over Rs 90 crore.
