Bhubaneswar: Eminent Odia littérateur Sarat Chandra Pradhan, who undertook and sustained an untiring effort for 18 years to develop 10 volumes of complete Odia Bhasakosha, passed away in Cuttack on Saturday evening. He was 88.
Pradhan was a popular teacher of Odia language and literature and taught at several government colleges, including Ravenshaw, and universities across the state from 1959 to 1994. After his retirement as a professor from Sambalpur University in 1994, he served as a visiting professor at several universities until 2002.
Born at Champua in Keonjhar district in 1934, Pradhan studied at erstwhile Ravenshaw College, Cuttack. His has written 19 books of different genres.
Most notable among his work is the mission he undertook after his retirement He led a team of four academics to start working on Odia Bhasakosha in 1994. The 10 volumes of the Bhasakosha which were published in a span of 18 years until 2012 contain five lakh Odia words in 11,000 pages, where each Odia word has its meaning in Odia, Bengali and English. It is regarded as the most comprehensive Bhasakosha after the Purnachandra Odia Bhashakosha of 1936.
