Koraput: Three officials of Dabugaon police station have been suspended on charges of dereliction of duty in connection with the custodial death of a 23-year-old accused on the police station premises.
The suspended officials are sub-inspector Bikram Sahu of Dabugaon police station and OAPF personnel Karn Pujari and Budhiram Majhi, police sources said.
“Prima facie evidence was established that owing to the dereliction of duty of the three officials, the suicide took place inside the police station. Hence, they were put under suspension and necessary action will be taken,” said SP (Nabarangpur) Sandeep Sampad Madkar.
The action came a day after Purna Kalar (23) of Anchala village under Dabugaon police limits, was found hanging inside the lock-up on Wednesday morning. He had been arrested in connection with the alleged abduction of a minor girl.
Sources said Kalar was taken into custody on Monday and lodged in the lock-up. He was found hanging in the toilet of the police station on Wednesday morning, triggering tension in the area. Police had said an inquiry would be conducted into the circumstances leading to the death.
Police said the body was handed over to the family after post-mortem examination at the district headquarters hospital, and the last rites were performed at the deceased’s native village.
