Students clueless about no-plastic drive as colleges yet to issue notice

Bhopal: Plastic-free Bhopal is the new trend in the city, however, students in the state-capital seem to be clueless about the same as no notice was issued in their universities and colleges in this regard.

Earlier this month, the ministry of environment, forest and climate change issued an advisory that all government premises, public and private sector firms and all offices may be discouraged to use plastic products, including artificial flowers, banners, flags, flower pots, PET plastic water bottles, plastic stationery items like folders and any other plastic material for which an alternative exists. The government has also imposed a complete ban on Single use plastic (SUPs), effective October 2.

Students and officials at Barkatullah University, were completely clueless. “I have heard about plastic ban in the past but nothing like single used plastic. There was not even any awareness camp organized by the university,” said Ankit Sahu, a student.

Another student said BU has not even put any information on the campus about it. “I have heard about in news. And despite being an important issue, there was no such notice put up by th authorities in the campus,” said Mann Yadav.

Situation was same in government colleges like MVM and Hamidia. “Is it really going to happen? What we will use if SUPs are banned. College authorities must aware students about it,” said Praveen Sharma, a student.

On the contrary, Bhopal rail division has not only launched awareness campaign but also made it clear that heavy penalty will be imposed on vendors if they use single use plastics at the railway station premises. Wooden spoons, paper cups and Kulhads (clay cups) will soon replace plastic glasses, spoons and cups at Bhopal and Habibganj railway stations. From October 2, single-use plastics will be banned at railway stations across Bhopal division, making way for biodegradable products.

When contacted, BU’s registrar Ajit Shrivastava said the notification in this regard will be issued soon. “We are working on how to make students aware about stop using the single use plastic. We will definitely issue the notification before October 2,” said Shrivastava.
