State must file review petition on SC TET decision: Diggy to CM
Bhopal: Former CM and outgoing Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh shot off a letter to CM Mohan Yadav on Saturday, drawing attention to the problems faced by over two lakh teachers working in govt schools in the state. He has urged that, considering the recent decision of the Supreme Court, the state govt should file a review petition or curative petition, demanding that the TET (Teacher Eligibility Test) requirement be implemented prospectively rather than retrospectively. On Sept 1, the SC ruled that it would be compulsory for teachers to clear the TET with service of more than 5 years remaining. Singh wrote that the Right to Education Act was enacted by the Central Govt in 2009, which was implemented in Madhya Pradesh from April 1, 2010.In compliance with this, the Supreme Court, in its decisions in Civil Appeal Nos. 1385/2025, 1386/2025, and other cases related to Maharashtra, made it mandatory for all primary and secondary teachers to pass the TET exam. However, teachers with five years remaining until retirement were exempted. Failure to pass the exam could result in termination of service or retirement. The former chief minister stated that, as per an order issued by the state govt's education dept in March 2026, passing the TET exam has been made mandatory for all teachers, with the exam expected to be held in July-August 2026. This order has caused deep concern among over two lakh teachers.
