: A police station in charge (SHO) was on Monday suspended in

Chhatarpur district

for negligence after a minor who was set ablaze by a man succumbed to her injuries.

The accused is alleged to have set ablaze a 16-year-old girl in

Nowgaon

town when she resisted to his sexual advancements.

Family of the deceased alleged that the SHO did not act on time, otherwise the incident would have been averted after which the additional SP Jairaj Kuber suspended him.

Police said accused Rafiq Khan, 28, a resident of Gafoor basti barged into a neighbour’s house on Friday and tried to molest the minor, who was alone. When the minor resisted, the accused poured kerosene on her and set her on fire. With 90% burns, the minor was rushed to hospital where she died on Saturday.

There were protests in the area after the minor’s death.

Accused is alleged to be harassing the minor for about a year. Rafiq was booked under the sections of murder and POCSO (protection of children under sexual offences) act among other sections. The accused is on the run.
