Rare liver surgery held at BMHRC

Bhopal: It is a disease that affects one in ten lakh people. A 35-year-old woman from Sagar was diagnosed and successfully treated at Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC), for Budd-Chiari syndrome, a rare condition that blocks blood flow from the liver, causing severe discomfort. The patient was treated though Direct Intrahepatic Portocaval Shunt (DIPS) procedure that uses interventional radiology technique. The woman’s condition is now improving and she has been discharged from the hospital. BMHRC HoD Radiology, Dr Radheshyam Meena along with anesthesiologist, Dr Gaurav Acharya and others performed the complex procedure wherein a stent is placed between the portal ‘vein and vena cava’ which carry blood from the liver to the heart.

Two interventional radiology procedures — Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS) and DIPS have been started at BMHRC. These are the non-surgical procedures and patient can be discharge in a day or two after the procedure, stated a press release issued here. BMHRC director Dr Manisha Shrivastava said TIPS and DIPS are complex procedures in intervention radiology. The facility is available at few hospitals in Bhopal. In private hospitals, it costs around Rs 3 to Rs 4.5 lakh, whereas at BMHRC, the treatment is free of cost for Bhopal gas tragedy affected people, their dependents and Ayushman Yojana beneficiaries.
