BHOPAL: As the nation continues to protest in outrage against the gang-rape and torture of a 23-year-old student in a moving bus in New Delhi, the Madhya Pradesh Congress leader of Opposition
Ajay Singh on Friday asked for stringent laws and even death sentence for rapists.
An hour after Ajay Singh's statement, the BJP's national spokesman
Prakash Javadekar announced that if the
BJP comes to power at the Centre there will be stringent and effective laws to curb crimes against women.
We promise the nation to take a relook into the administrative and legal aspect of rape cases. Several changes will have to ensure strict law implementation, faster justice for rape victims, gender sensitivity amongst law enforcers and to make women aware of their rights,'' he said.
Quizzed about BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh having the highest number of reported rape cases in the country, Javadekar said: The statistics are shocking for every state in the country and we are concerned. It is a very serious matter and strict laws have to be made nationally.''
Speaking to reporters on Friday evening Ajay Singh said: There has to be very strict and stringent laws to curb such heinous crimes against women. There cannot be any tolerance on this issue. Rapists must be hanged.''
