BHOPAL: A mechanic was critically injured in a brazen daylight shooting — shocking in its apparent randomness — in Bhopal’s Shahjehanabad locality on Thursday afternoon. DIG Irshad Wali has announced a Rs 10,000 reward for arrest of the shooter.
Police are yet to find any motive for the attack, and the victim, 40-year-old Hafiz alias Bhaiya Khan, doesn’t have a clue to why someone would want to kill him.
In fact, he didn’t even know he had been shot when a searing pain suddenly left him screaming in agony. He was bewildered when an X-ray showed a bullet lodged in his back.
The shooting was caught on CCTV. The attackers came on a bike, fired a shot, and sped away before people on the busy road realized what had happened.
Shahjehanabad SHO Zaheer Khan said Hafiz runs a car workshop in Bajaria locality along with his friend and partner Abid Khan.
Hafiz has told police that around 11.45am, he was lying under a van parked on the main road, and repairing it, when he heard a bang and felt pain shoot through his abdomen and back.
Realizing he was bleeding, he crawled out and asked Abid to take him to hospital.
He didn’t realise he had been shot.
Abid was taken to a nearby private hospital, where he was X-rayed and doctors told him it was a gunshot. He was shifted to another hospital for treatment and police were informed.
SHO Khan said they have registered an attempt-to-murder case and are looking for the attackers. “Hafiz has denied having any rivalry with anybody,” said the SHO. Police have found that he had a tiff with a neighbour, and are exploring if it is connected with the attack.
