BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh government has included

Ramcharitmanas

as one of the new optionals for undergraduate students in philosophy, along with lessons on the ‘miraculous engineering of Ram Setu’ and the ideals of

Ram Rajya

in a bid to inculcate “values and balanced leadership” among the youth.

The ‘

Applied Philosophy of Ramcharitmanas

’, a 100-mark paper in philosophy, is among a clutch of new courses announced by the higher education department, including one on MP’s Urdu ghazal connect.

“Ramcharitmanas, Yoga and meditation will be taught in colleges for all round development of students,” higher education minister

Mohan Yadav

said.

His department has come out with the syllabus, which includes the difference between Ramayana and Ramcharitmanas, ‘spirituality and religion in root sources of Indian culture’, description of four

Yugs

in Vedas, Upanishads and

Puranas

and study of construction of Ram Setu as an ‘engineering miracle’.

“The main objective is that after such studies, students will be able to develop balanced leadership abilities and humanistic attitude by focusing on various dimensions of personality development. They can also inculcate life values that are much needed in society today. With this, they will be able to become efficient motivational speakers in stress management and personality development,” said Yadav.

Among the new optionals are ‘Urdu Zaban Aur Mukhtalif Asnaf’ and ‘Madhya Pradesh Mein Urdu Ghazal’. NCC and

NSS

have also been added as optional subjects for the students.

In the foundation course of English, first-year students will be taught the preface to C Rajagopalachari's ‘Mahabharata’. Yoga and meditation are also offered as third foundation courses, alongside English and Hindi. These include Om meditation and recitation of mantras.

The MP government had recently announced that it was going to implement national education policy, which has The Mahabharata, Ramcharitmanas, Yoga and meditation. “Accordingly, the applied philosophy of Ramcharitmanas has been kept as an optional subject,” said an official. Ramcharitmanas was earlier open to only students of Hindi literature, but now anyone can opt for it.
