Property buyers rush to finish registrations before new rate hike
Bhopal: On March 31, registration offices at ISBT and Pari Bazaar witnessed an unprecedented rush as buyers sought to complete property registrations before the new rates kicked in. Late on Tuesday evening, more than 1,000 registrations were recorded. Starting April 1, stamp duties increased significantly, with hikes of 50% or more in 104 locations, and some areas seeing jumps of 100%, 150% and even 181%.The final day of the financial year saw packed offices despite occasional internet slowdowns. More than 1,000 documents were processed, generating Rs 20 crore in revenue in a single day. The district surpassed its annual target of Rs 350 crore. Senior district registrar Swapnesh Sharma noted that registration slots at ISBT, Pari Bazaar and Govindpura were expanded to 700 per office, allowing operations to continue until night.Buyers stayed up late to secure slots for March 31. Demand drafts were also prepared overnight. Sanjay Meena, a buyer at Pari Bazaar, booked his slot at 2 a.m. and obtained his DD at 10 a.m., but was allotted a 3 p.m. slot. The standard construction cost has risen from Rs 13,000 to Rs 14,000 per square metre. For a 1,000 sq. ft. property (approx. 100 sq. m); this means an additional Rs 10,000 in registration costs. The hike applies to houses, shops, flats, warehouses and commercial premises.
