The red sandstone structure was built around 1920 during the rule of Begum Sultan Jehan. It was designed by Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, chief engineer of the state of Jaipur, the man credited with design of Laxmi Niwas Palace and Lalgarh Palace (Bikaner), Albert Hall Museum (Jaipur), Daly College (Indore) along with main building for St Stephen's College, Delhi (at Kashmiri Gate).

It has a clock tower, jharokhas, decorated parapet of stone crenellatios, pavalions, moulded plinth stone, decorative stone stairs, semi-circular arches, ventilators and decorative pillars are some of features of the hospital building.

The building was known as Prince of Wales hospital until 1937-38, when it was renamed as Hamidia hospital.
