Bhopal: A foul stench emanating from a deserted house in Govari village in Anuppur district of MP made the locals suspicious and alerted the cops, who forced their way into the house only to find a highly decomposed and mutilated body of a 24-year-old woman on March 15. Cops however managed to solve the murder mystery with the arrest of a man within 48 hours.
Police said the body was in an advanced state of decomposition, with several parts badly damaged.
Initial investigation suggested a suspicious death, following which police formed a special team. Personal belongings recovered from the scene and verification with a missing person's report identified the victim as Kajal Puri (24), a resident of Lapta village who was missing since Feb 17.
Police said Kajal left home on Feb 17 and told her family she was going to college, but she did not return.
Her last known contact led investigators to Chandrabhan Rathore, also known as Ravi or ‘Thakur Sahab', who was detained and questioned.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed that he was in a relationship with Kajal after meeting her on Facebook months ago. Police said she began pressuring him to marry her, but he refused, citing social constraints, and allegedly plotted the murder.
According to police, on Feb 17, he took Kajal on his motorcycle to the isolated house in Govari village and attacked her with a stone, killing her. Police said he then tried to destroy evidence by destroying her SIM card and hiding her mobile phone.
Police said they recovered key evidence, including the victim's phone and the motorcycle used in the crime.
