HIRDENAGAR(MANDLA): A temple of goddess off-limits for women, 450 km from state capital may be an oddity for some in this age and time. But for scores of regulars, temple in Hirdenagar village of tribal-dominated Mandla district, there’s nothing strange. And popularity of the temple has gone far and wide and devotees from others districts reaching the area only attest to it.
Words inscribed on main entrance to Chapri Mata temple mentions, ‘Mahilayein Is Dwar Ke Aage Na Jaayein’ (women should not go past this door).
Internal gate of the temple also displays clear warning, ‘Matayein, behnein andar na jaayein, Bahar Se Hi Puja Karein’, (mothers, sisters please don’t go in the temple, worship from outside). The strange thing is nobody in village has a clue about when and who banned entry of women in this abode of deity.
