HC stays temple construction in police stations

Bhopal/Jabalpur: In an interim order, a division bench of the MP High Court stayed the construction of temples in police station premises in MP while issuing notices to the Chief Secretary, DGP, and other respondents in a petition raising objections to the construction of temples in police station premises. This was in light of the Supreme Court guidelines that religious places cannot be constructed in public places. Advocate O P Yadav, in his petition, stated that police stations are also public places, yet there are temples at several police stations in the state, and temples are being constructed in many more. This is a blatant violation of the Supreme Court order on the construction of temples and other religious places in public places.The petitioner provided examples of four police stations in Jabalpur that have temples in their premises and also presented pictures to show the presence of temples inside the police station premises. He sought that the temples constructed in the police station premises should be removed and action be initiated against the SHOs of the concerned police stations.Following the initial hearing in the case, the bench of Chief Justice Suresh Kait and Justice Vivek Jain stayed the construction of temples in police station premises and issued notices to respondents seeking a response.
