UJJAIN: A mother of three shot dead her husband and brother-in-law at her house in a village near Ujjain, and then walked to the police station, gun in hand, to surrender, police said Monday.

Police aren't sure of the motive yet, nor how she got her hands on a semi-automatic pistol. There is a hint of a family dispute over property, but police are investigating deeper to find what triggered the burst of rage.

The accused, 38-year-old Savita, has been booked for murder. She worked as an anganwadi worker and lived with her husband Radheshyam and three children in Ingoriya village, around 30 km from Ujjain.

On Monday morning, Radheshyam's brother, Dinesh alias Dheeraj, 45, came over from his village, Kumaria, around 4km away.

According to police, an argument erupted between Savita and Dinesh, and Radheshyam sided with his elder brother. The argument escalated and the woman suddenly pulled out a pistol and fired at the two men at point-blank range in the presence of the children.

She shot hubby twice: Cops
She shot her husband Radheshyam twice and Dinesh once, ASP rural Nitesh Bhargava said. Then, she walked to Ingoriya police station with the pistol in hand, and told the stunned cops that she had shot two family members.

A police team rushed to her house and found Radheshyam dead, but Dinesh was still breathing. They took him to the district hospital, when he died during treatment.

Preliminary probe has indicated a family dispute, said the ASP. Ingoriya police station SI Dinesh Ninama said, "The family had a small patch of land in the village and Savita wanted a share in it. Her husband sided with his brother on the property issue and didn't support her demand for a share."

Police are probing if there was a deeper motive involved. They are yet to figure out how she got her hands on the countrymade pistol. Forensics officer Shakuntala Gavali said physical evidence had been collected from the crime scene and sent for lab tests.
