Man works as comp operator in place of wife, siphons Rs 36L fund in canal project in Rewa
Bhopal: A couple was booked as the husband used to work in place of his wife, who was appointed as a computer operator at Keonti canal divisionunder the Bansagar project. The accused allegedly siphoned off around Rs 36 lakh of public funds.Based on the complaint of the executive engineer of Keoni canal division, Manoj Kumar Tiwari, a case was registered against Durgesh Gupta (the wife who was actually employed as a computer operator) and her husband, Santosh Gupta, who worked in place of his wife and executed the crime.A case of fraud was registered at Saman police station of Rewa district, and investigations are ongoing.As per the FIR, executive engineer Manoj Kumar Tiwari informed the police, "This office is located at Bansagar Saman Colony, Rewa, and operates under the water resources department, govt of Madhya Pradesh. According to the orders of the MP administration, Durgesh Gupta, wife of Santosh Gupta, resident of Bansagar Colony, Rewa Road, Satna, was contracted as a computer operator for the smooth functioning of the office. The contract was executed in Dec 2017. Instead of Durgesh, her husband Santosh was performing the duties of a computer operator in this office.The commissioner of treasury and accounts, MP Bhopal, via letter number SPIC//CN446803/110 Bhopal dated March 21, 2025, instructed the collector Rewa to investigate fraudulent payments made in this office. Based on the recommendations of the investigation committee formed by collector Rewa, letter number 240/Kosha/2025 Rewa dated March 21, 2025, and letter number Investigation/2025/299 Rewa dated April 11, 2025, it was ordered to file an FIR against Durgesh and Santosh Gupta. Santosh, who worked as the then computer operator, facilitated fraudulent payments in the accounts of an employee, Girish Kumar Mishra, a helper and permanent employee under this office, who passed away on May 5, 2020. An amount of Rs 35.53 lakh was paid to Girish Kumar Mishra for 9 months' salary from other allowances and special salary heads, whereas the actual payment for 9 months was Rs 160,028.
