There was no parapet wall around the well which led to the mishap.

Located about 20 kms away from

Sagar city

, Sanodha is surrounded by jungles with lots of wildlife around. Herds of deer and neelgai have also been causing damage to the crops as well, villagers said.

On Monday evening when the villagers were working in the fields preparing for the rabi crop sowing, they heard a splash echoing the sound of something striking against the water.

"The sound was heard a number of times", said Ramdeen, a farmer who was working nearby," adding "we thought some children might have fallen into the water body". The well has over 15 feet of water in it and is accident prone because of the absence of a parapet wall, he said.

The villagers rushed to the well and found four deer trying to save themselves from drowning in the cold water. It was a wintery evening as a villager took off his clothes and decided to jump into the well. But the villagers informed the police and the forest department.

SHO of

Sanodha police station

Anupama Sharma said, "as we reached, one of our staff members stepped down into the well and tied a rope around one of the deer which was gradually taken out”.

One by one, the other three were also taken out. Shivering with cold, the adult females were released as they galloped and vanished in the nearby woods.
