Kin of deceased should get Rs 10L compensation: Govt

The Centre should provide a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to kin of 15,342 persons, who died in the Bhopal gas tragedy. The state government has raised a demand to this effect at quarterly review meeting of the Gas Relief & Rehabilitation Department in the city on Monday, stated a release.

BHOPAL: The Centre should provide a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to kin of 15,342 persons, who died in the Bhopal gas tragedy. The state government has raised a demand to this effect at quarterly review meeting of the Gas Relief & Rehabilitation Department in the city on Monday, stated a release. Representatives of gas victims would also be taken to New Delhi to meet the Prime Minister.

The participants were told that the centre has sanctioned a new action plan of Rs 273 crore. Under the plan, during the next three years, Rs 33.55 crore for medical rehabilitation, Rs 104 crore for economic rehabilitation, Rs 85.2 crore for social rehabilitation and Rs 50 crore would be made available for drinking water arrangements in the gas-hit areas.
Centre’s Group of Ministers have decided that compensation worth Rs 10 lakh each will be provided to 5,295 deceased persons, Rs 5 lakh each to 4,944, who suffered permanent disability and whose working capacity has been reduced, Rs 2 lakh each to 3,000 kidney and cancer patients and Rs one lakh each to 34,455 persons who have suffered temporary disability. The assistance will be made available to 48,694 gas-hit.
The meeting was chaired by chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
