Bhopal: A burst pipeline turned into a 30-feet fountain in
Kolar
area in
Bhopal
on Monday — after a
JCB
machine hit the underground water supply pipeline. The incident took place in Kolar, when the
Kerwa
supply line was damaged by Bhopal Municipal Corporation (
BMC
) during sewage network construction.
Nearby shops were also gutted with water. The incident has brought into focus the oversight by BMC.
The damage will hit the water supply in nearby areas during the next two days.
The work of sewage network laying is under government’s AMRUT Yojana.
As per norms, engineers water works wing of the BMC should have coordinated with MP irrigation department.
The situation would have aggravated if the water touched the overhead electrical lines. Senior BMC water works officials were not present on the site after the incident, said locals. Many shopkeepers are demanding BMC and appointed contractors to pay for damages.
Kerwa pipeline passes through Mandakini intersection of Kolar for road going towards Bimakunj. The incident took place around noon. BMC water works staffer later used the JCB to curtain the high rise fountain.
It took more than an hour for the water supply to stop. However, with Kerwa line closed many parts of the city will go without water. Water supply disruption is expected in at least five BMC wards.
