India’s only sanskrit band to spread wings

Bhopal

: Some enterprising musicians took out sanskrit shlokas and hymns from the holy scriptures to weave a musical magic. They came up with the idea of ‘Dhruvaa’- the all sanskrit music band. The band was formed on Basant Panchami last year.

Dhruvaa is the brainchild of

Sanjay Dwivedi

, a sanskrit scholar and practioner of classical music. He has also written several Sanskrit plays.

After enthralling audiences with 12 performances across the country, the band is eyeing to spread their unique Sanskrit compositions across the world.

“Music in all its kinds is good. But at the same time it’s important that classical music, which directly connects to soul, should reach out to all generations. I never wanted to have only handful of classical music lovers to be my audience, targeting the youth I took a step forward on January 24, 2015 with my friends Vaibhav Santore and Gyaneshwari Parsai. Idea was to synchronize harmonious hymns and shlokas with western music. We are happy that its being loved,” said Dwivedi.

To some it may sound weird, and thoughts might take the brain by stormy vision of how it may feel to hear such music. Some thought they might be using few sanskrit verses in a sufi music only, others thought how is it possible to be hooked to it, but there were some who got lost in its tunes.

When the band takes over stage, enchanting hymns are blended with the rocking western music to enthral the audience. Their hymns include mantras of Rigveda, sholkas of Bhaja Govindam composed by

Adi Shankaracharya

, the rhythmic mantras of Shiv Tandav, Geet Govindam by Jaidev, Madhurashtakam by Vallabhacharya, Prem Patras like those from

Abhigyan Shakuntalam

and tales of sailor etc. Apart from these, the band also creates their original compositions on poems and prose which describe about the social life of a common man.

Their latest composition is Sanskrit version of “Sukh ka data, sabka sathi, shubh ka ye sandesh hai, maa ki god, pita ka aashray mera

Madhya Pradesh

hai.”
