He is the first IAS officer in Madhya Pradesh to die after being diagnosed with Coronavirus.

Akhtar was posted as secretary with the home department and had been under treatment for Covid-19 for a month. Doctors say he had tested negative three days ago, but was battling chest infections. He suffered a cardiac arrest and died on Friday, say officials.

He is survived by his wife and an eight-year-old son. An officer of the 1986 batch of state services, Akhtar was elevated to IAS in 2011. He was collector of Chhatarpur for four years.

The Covid pandemic has stung MP bureaucracy, with at least 20 IAS officers and 106 officials at the state secretariat being infected.
