BHOPAL: Union minister Uma Bharti courted a controversy by taking a dig at non-performing bureaucrats. During her address at

programme, Bharti said that 'honest officers' are of no use and 'dishonest officers' are better than honest ones as they at least perform and have guts to take up the challenge given to them. "What is the use of honesty when nothing comes out of it? Such honesty should be buried in 'hell", she said.

She said, "Kai IAS-IPS ye kah dete hain ke main to imaandar hoon main ye nahin karunga...vo nahin karunga.. aise main to main ye kai baar kehti hun ki tumse to baimaan achche hain jo kam se kam kaam karke to dikha denge..Tumhari imandari ka karenge kya ? Ye to paataal main dafnane ke layak hai..iska kya karenge (Some IAS-IPS make excuses for not performing. They say they are honest and cannot do this or that thing. But, I sometimes say that 'dishonest' officer are better who can at least show their performance. What your honesty is meant for? This is to be buried in the hell..what could be done)".

Bharti later clarified that she was capable of handling dishonest officers too. She said dishonest people cannot work with her team. She can get them corrected. "Aur baimaan to hamare saath baimaan rah hi nahi sakta hai. Hamare jaise log jahan baithe honge to wahan himmat kiski hogi baimaani karne ki. Hum to achhe achhon ko theek kar denge (A dishonest person cannot stay with us. We can take them on the task)," she said.

Bharti also took a jibe at officers who work at their whims and fancies. tnn
