Govt taken note of shackling of deported Indians from US: Khattar

Bhopal: The central govt has taken note of concerns over the way illegal Indian immigrants were deported from the US, restrained in shackles and handcuffs during their 40-hour return flight, Union minister Manohar Khattar said here on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters, Khattar said the govt was aware of objections raised over the deportation process. "The US deported people (illegal migrants from India) earlier too. However, this time objection was taken on the way deportation was done," the Union housing and urban affairs minister said.
"This objection has been registered, and the matter will be resolved through dialogue. What happened is not good for any country and the govt will take up the matter further after giving some thought," he said.
On Feb 5, a US military aircraft landed in Amritsar carrying 104 deported illegal Indian migrants, who had been restrained throughout their journey.
A day later, external affairs minister S Jaishankar told Parliament that the govt was in communication with the US regarding the alleged mistreatment of Indian citizens.
Khattar, who was in Bhopal on Sunday to brief the media on the Union Budget presented by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Feb 1, was also asked whether India should consider deporting illegal Bangladeshi migrants, as the US had done with Indian nationals.
"This is a serious issue," he said. "People should not migrate illegally, whether it is us going abroad or others coming here. Deportation is a routine process, and we have also deported many illegal migrants from Assam."
The former Haryana CM said, "There are formalities and sensitivities involved in deportation. The timing, procedure and manner of execution need careful consideration."
