BHOPAL: A special judge for
CBI cases in Bhopal has sentenced Sheikh Adam Shafi, then dean and professor of Regional Institute of Education, Bhopal, to four years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs 41,000 in a case relating to irregularities in the recruitment process of teachers by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), regional office, Bhopal.
The CBI Bhopal unit investigated the case following a complaint by chief vigilance officer of Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti at its headquarters in Noida, G Arumugam, on August 27, 2014.
The CBI had registered a case on September 3, 2014, against the then deputy director, regional office, NVS, Bhopal and other unknown persons for alleged irregularities in recruitment/appointment of teachers in various departments, including music, librarian, arts and physical education in 2012-13.
After investigation, a chargesheet was filed against Shafi and deputy director NVS Bhopal Dr Mohd Kalim, for allegedly changing marks of interviews to benefit some candidates at the cost of others. Kalim passed away. during the trial. As many as 32 prosecution witnesses were examined after which the court found Shafi guilty of criminal conspiracy, fraud and forgery in his capacity as chairperson of the interview board for selection of teachers.
