Don’t know why I was beaten, says Assam student assaulted in MP
Bhopal: "I do not know why they did this to me. I don't even know them," Hiros Jyoti Das, a master's student from Assam, told TOI, recounting the brutal assault he suffered on Jan 13 in his hostel room at Indira Gandhi National Tribal University in Amarkantak in MP's Anuppur district. The assault led to protests by students. Following CCTV verification, the five accused were expelled by the university, but they are yet to be arrested.
"We have filed a case and a detailed probe is being carried out," additional SP Anuppur, Jagannath Markam, said. "Things will be clear once the investigation is over."The matter has also drawn political attention. Late on Friday evening, chief minister Mohan Yadav said, "Police have registered an FIR and are taking due legal action. The university administration has also taken action at its own level against the accused students. No one will be spared." Hiros has been living in Amarkantak for the past four years, first for his undergraduate studies and then going on to pursue a master's in Economics. The attack had left him traumatised, he said, adding, "The attackers were identified by the university, but I didn't even know their names. I have never faced such a situation before. Even now, I am not able to understand why they did it. They asked where I was from and other personal details, and then attacked," he said.According to the FIR filed at Amarkantak police station, Hiros was beaten up around 4 am at the GGBH hostel by five students — Anurag Pandey, Jatin Singh, Rajneesh Tiwari, Vishal Yadav and Utkarsh Singh. The complaint stated that two of the accused held his hands while others repeatedly punched and kicked him, leaving him with a fractured nose and injuries near his eyes and lips. Hiros said the assailants also used abusive words for his mother and sister, and threatened him with death. The incident drew condemnation from various quarters. MP Congress president Jitu Patwari termed the assault "extremely unfortunate", and urged authorities to take strict action. ABVP also submitted a memorandum to the SP demanding stringent action against the accused.
