Bhopal: In next two years, Raja Bhoj Airport in Bhopal will be ready to welcome large commercial aircraft such as the Boeing 777, Boeing 787, and others.
The 2026-27 Union budget has allocated funds to extend the runway by 672 meters, increasing its length from the current 2,744 meters to 3,416 meters. This enhancement will place Bhopal among an elite group of just 15 Indian airports capable of handling such operations.

"The comprehensive runway project includes not only the extension to 3,416 meters but also strengthening the pavement to Code-E standards. This will allow the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft safely and efficiently," said director airport, Ramjee Awasthi.
Code-E aircraft are large, heavy wide-body jets with wingspans ranging from 52 to 65 meters (170.6 to 213.3 feet). Popular models in this category include Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 family, which require robust infra for operations. Additional developments encompass new parking bays and supporting airside infrastructure. Construction is set to begin soon, with completion targeted in around two years.
These upgrades extend beyond the runway to encompass passenger facilities, cargo handling, navigation systems, safety measures, and overall runway capacity. The improvements promise significant benefits: enhanced safety protocols, superior passenger experiences, support for long-haul and international flights, and a boost to tourism, trade, logistics, and MP's economy.
