There are several delicacies available in the city for iftar, but despite options like mutton samosas and chicken tikka lining iftar stalls, the sale of dates is steadily on the rise. And Ajwa is one variety that is consumed excessively because of its health benefits.
These dates arrive from Saudi Arabia and cost around Rs 2000 a kilo. Mohammad Sohail, who owns a date shop at Jumerati Square, says, “Ajwa dates are soft and black in colour.

There are several other varieties like Deglet Nour, Mazafati, Medjoul and Zahedi available in the market, but thanks to their nutritional value, Ajwa dates are a hit among those observing fast. Even the non-Muslims consume Ajwa owing to its health benefits.”
Ahmad Khan, a vendor at Peer Gate, who stocks a variety of dates for the season, says that sale shoots up to 60 to 70 per cent during this month. “We offer eight varieties, but Ajwa, which is quite rich, sees a lot of demand.” Merajuddin Siddique, a customer, says, “After fasting for a day, Ajwa gives you enough energy and I break my fast with dates. I got to know about the medicinal value of this variety when my father was suffering from a liver problem. He got a lot of relief when he started consuming Ajwa dates.” Mohammad Arbaaz, another customer shares, “This variety is expensive, but because of its health benefits, we consume Ajwa a lot during Ramadan.”
Many strongly believe in the therapeutic value of Ajwa. Dr Mohammad Laeeq Khan says, “Ajwa dates are rich in sulphur, iron, fibre, copper, potassium and folic acid. Around seven Ajwa dates contain about 120 calories and consuming them every morning can protect one from heart-related diseases.” Humera Khatun, a teacher, says, “It is better to preserve these dates in their natural form because Ajwa has the capacity to help avert cardiac problems. My parents consume Ajwa and it has helped maintain their digestive system.”
