Family members found the remains of 65-year-old Ram Awtar Yadav on Saturday morning when they went to the cremation ground to collect the ashes of his grandson Abhay Raj Yadav, 34, and his wife Savita Yadav, 30.

Sihoilya village, around 650km from Bhopal, is numbed with shock and grief.

According to police, Abhay murdered Savita in a fit of anger over a family dispute on Friday morning. Stricken by remorse, he died by suicide. The family informed Bahri police station, and the bodies were taken away for post-mortem.

Late Friday evening, the bodies were handed over to the family, who took them for cremation at around 7pm. After setting the pyre alight, they all returned home, along with Ram Awtar Yadav, Bahri police station in charge, Rakesh Vaisya, told TOI.

In their collective grief, no one noticed how devastated the grandfather was. No one saw him leave the house in the dead of night.

"Everyone went to sleep late. In the morning, when they went to collect the ashes, they also found the charred body of Ram Awtar on the pyre and informed us," Vaisya told TOI.

After autopsy, the body was handed over to the family. "No one in the family or village saw the elderly man jumping into the pyre. He probably went there after everyone slept. Two cases of unnatural death and one case of murder have been registered," Vaisya said.
