BELLARY: Twenty-seven minor irrigation tanks will be developed in Bellary district this year under the dryland development project-9, according to zilla panchayat president Sanna Hanumakka.
She said about Rs 8.10 crores will be spent on these minor tanks which would be constructed in the taluks of Hadagali, Kudligi, Sandur and Hagaribommanahalli for which the zilla panchayat had passed a resolution to this effect.
After completion of the work, these tanks would help irrigate about 13,000 hectares of land in the taluks, she said.
Hanumakka said the zilla panchayat had proposed to involve local communities in the construction while also ensuring that the ecology is not disturbed. Under the dryland development project, 23 minor tanks will be developed while the remaining will be developed by the Karnataka Integrated Development Society (KIDS), a non-governmental agency.
She also said that construction of a training centre and hostel for boys and girls would be taken up at a cost of Rs 1.55 crores to train rural youth under the various programmes. The ZP has also decided to purchase medical supplies for veterinary hospitals in the district at a cost about Rs. 4.72 lakh through tenders.
About 3,876 kgs of free seedlings will be distributed among sericulturists, she added. Zilla panchayat vice-president K.S.L. Swamy, deputy commissioner S.N. Jayaram and legislator M. Shankar Reddy were present. No liquor sale: Deputy commissioner S.N. Jayaram has announced that there will be no sale of liquor in the district on October 4 and 5 on account of Ayudha Pooja and Vijayadashami festivals. He has issued orders to close down all liquor shops, bars and restaurants on the two days.
Blood donation camp: Deputy commissioner S.N. Jayaram inaugurated the national voluntary blood donation jatha organised by the Karnataka AIDS Prevention Society, Bangalore, in association with district health and family welfare department, zilla panchayat and Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), Bellary, at the blood bank campus here. The jatha passed through the main streets of the town to create awareness about the importance of voluntary blood donations. The camp was inaugurated by Dr S. Pampapathi, taluk health officer, Dr. Jayakumar, district AIDS/TB control officer by donating blood. Students from Taranath Government Ayurvedic College also donated blood on the occasion.
