Kollegal Rural police are looking for the parents and grand parents of a 20-year-old woman whose body was found floating in the Cauvery canal in Shivanasamudra of Chamarajanagar district.
Her husband has lodged a police complaint, alleging that her family members had killed her as they were opposed to the match.
Mutturaj, the husband, said they belong to the same caste but his in-laws disapproved of him on other grounds.
Police said Jyothi, a resident of KVN Doddi village, married Mutturaj of Budigere village two months ago.
“Jyothi and Mutturaj are distant relatives and were in love over the past four years. Recently, when Mutturaj made the marriage proposal to Jyothi’s parents, they rejected it citing various reasons. Jyothi and Mutturaj ran away from home and got married. This angered Jyothi’s parents,” said a police officer.
“On November 17, Jyothi went missing from her husband’s home in Budigere. Three days later, on Wednesday, her body was found in the Cauvery river canal in Shivanasamudra.
Mutturaj has lodged complaint with us alleging that Jyothi’s parents and grandparents murdered her when he was not at home and dumped her in the canal,” the officer said.
“We have registered a case in this regard. Her parents and grandparents are named as accused. They are absconding and we have launched a search operation. Once we arrest them, we will get a clear picture on the motive,” the police officer said.
