Woman convicted in currency racket

Bengaluru: A special court for cases registered by National Investigating Agency on Monday held a 53-year-old woman guilty of being part of a counterfeit currency racket busted in 2018 and later investigated by NIA.
The convict is J Vanita alias Tangam of Ramachandrapura, who has been in judicial custody in Bengaluru central prison since August 2018. The special court will announce the sentence on Tuesday.
Vanita and her six associates were arrested in mid-2018 and counterfeit currency notes of Rs 2,000 denomination (face value of Rs 6,84,000) were recovered from them. In December 2020, three accused — Sajjad Ali, MG Raju and Abdul Khadir — pleaded guilty and the special court in February 2021 sentenced them to six years’ simple imprisonment. Two more — Gangadhar Ramappa Kokhar and Sabruddin — were sentenced to six-year jail. tnn
