BENGALURU: The Bangalore Winter Meeting, which usually begins before the second week of November, will get start on December 2 and conclude on March 24 at the Bangalore Turf Club here. The postponement has forced the organisers to reduce the race days to 22 and will be held primarily on Fridays and Saturdays.

Inclement weather in the city last month, which affected track conditions, led to the deferment. “It was due to unforeseen circumstances. The conditions were beyond our control. We have reduced it to 22 days but with the assurance that we will increase the race days if possible,” BTC chairman Shivkumar Kheny said. “We also had two days of mock race. We wanted a confirmation from the jockeys that the track is okay.”
Around 100 jockeys and 29 ‘A’ licensed trainers, are expected for the season, which has a total prize money of Rs 13.31 crore. The main classic races, including the Bangalore Derby, witness an increase in the purse. An amount of Rs 75 lakh has been added to the Bangalore Derby kitty while the trophy value stands at Rs 2 lakh and a guaranteed money of Rs 1 crore. Besides, the BTC will also host invitational races. The Sprinter’s Cup (Grade I) and the Stayers’ Cup (Grade I) is scheduled for March 4 while the Indian Turf Invitation Cup (Grade I) and the Super Mile Cup (Grade I) will take place the following day. Online betting facility is unavailable as the BTC is yet to get a go-ahead from the High Court.
Nat’l Tote from Decmber All turf centres, including Bengaluru and Mysuru, have decided on a national tote from next month. This system will enable automated pool dividend calculation, display and distribution, bringing in better transparency, it is learnt. “We will begin on December 21. The combing operations are on and other technicalities are being studied,” Kheny said. A trial run for national tote will be held on December 19 and 20.
