The rain is typical of pre-monsoon showers when there is heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning.
Why the rain?
There is a trough of low pressure at the mean sea level which runs from Vidarbha to South Tamil Nadu across interior Karnataka. Along with that, there is also an upper air trough from Maharashtra to South Tamil Nadu, about 1.5 km above sea level.
"The winds are from the south easterly direction that bring a lot of moisture, there is enough heat due to good solar radiation. There are cumulonimbus clouds that contain a lot of moisture and high voltage lightning is also very common in this season," explained Putanna B, director, meteorological department.
When these clouds disintegrate there are strong winds and showers. "Rain and thunderstorms are expected in the coming few days across the state, specially in South interior Karnataka," he added. There is a forecast for rain and thundershowers in almost all parts and the temperatures have also soared up with some parts of North Karnataka recording up to 37 degrees Celsius.
