MANGALORE: The problem in Ward No. 54 of Mangalore City Corporation — Jappina Mogaru — is it is prone to floods during monsoon. The problem is further compounded by man-made interventions along NH 17.
It comprises areas of Jappina Mogaru, Tandolige, Karumbettu, Tardolya, Kadekar, Gorigudde, Ullal-Hoige, Adam Kudru, Nehru Road, Tochila and Bolla.
The ward, most of which is in a low-lying area, gets inundated during the monsoon.
Due to inadequate storm water drains, waters flood the fields besides the national highway.
The ward, which is on the south-eastern side of the corporation, is the exit point for the waste going into the sea. As a part of the ward lies on the estuary mouth, the area is also prone to erosion.
This year, some houses were damaged near the estuary.
Drinking water becomes scarce during summer as only Tandolige and Tardolya areas have water tanks, which get water from borewells.
The problem gets worse during power cuts. While the water problem is severe in Karambettu area, the corporator has suggested construction of water tank as a ‘catchment’ point to store enough for a day.
More than half the houses in the ward have water connections, while the rest depend on public taps. Recently, under the ‘Jala Bhagya’ scheme, 200 residents got water pipelines to their houses.
Underground drainage is absent in most part of the ward and only Kanakara Bettu and Nehru Road have the facility. The corporator is awaiting the implementation of ADB project.
The area also has a ‘wet well’, which pumps waste into the sea at Jappina Mogaru. Residents says it is unbearable to stay near the well due to the stench. During monsoon, the wet well overflows and proves a hazard.
