Disenfranchising Muslims: Seer apologises for remarks
Bengaluru: Vishwa Vokkaliga Mahasamastana Mutt seer, Kumara Chandrashekaranatha Swami, apologised Wednesday, a day after his controversial remarks calling for the disenfranchisement of Muslims sparked widespread backlash."Muslims are citizens of India and they have voting rights. I apologise to my Muslim brethren for my remarks, which was a slip of the tongue. I also request not to continue conversations on the statement," the seer stated in a written apology.During a protest organised by Bharatiya Kisan Sangha, an affiliate of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at Freedom Park in Bengaluru, the seer suggested Muslim voters should be denied voting rights to curb vote bank politics. "For the country to have a good name, politicians should pass a law to deny Muslim community voting rights," the seer had said while addressing protests over notices issued to farmers regarding waqf properties. In his clarification, the seer emphasised that he treated all communities equally, highlighting his participation in Muslim wedding functions and the mutual respect he shares with the community. "There is no hatred towards the community," he said.
