BENGALURU: Photoshoots and selfies, goodbyes and hugs marked the end of the two-week Times NIE summer training programme that saw the participation of over 120 students from schools across Bengaluru last week.

At the programme, which aimed at giving them a complete breakdown of the working of a newspaper, the students were introduced to a different aspect of journalism. They then explored their creativity, trying their hand at writing reviews and features, and designing pages that reflected their interests and thoughts on various subjects. It was indeed heartening for them to see their learning and efforts culminate in tangible pages that they could exhibit for everyone to see, all in an environment of fun and friendly competition.

The summer training provided the students an opportunity to discover aspects about themselves, to network with other participants and learn to collaborate.

Aarthi from My Master Strokes introduced a design challenge. Vijay P, lead (projects) at Cheshire Disability Trust, introduced them to the universal sign language. Paediatrician and adolescent specialist Dr Anuradha HS dealt with ‘Saying no to bullying’. Head of paediatric emergency Dr Rakshay Shetty and a team of doctors from Rainbow Children’s Medicare Ltd gave demos and tips on dealing with paediatric emergencies. Anuthama from web-based learning platform Digitcodemy opened up the world of AI for students. Team lead Sanjana Ogirala from Tata Soulful spoke about the importance of millets. Senior manager at Canara Bank Puneet Kulshreshtha held a session on financial literacy. Co-founder of Stayqrious India (Pvt) Ltd Avinash Anand set the students on the path of logical thinking, mind-mapping, problem solving, and finding creative solutions.

ITC Food and Tata Soulful provided the participants refreshments while ITC Classmate gave them stationery. Visits to the TOI press at Bommasandra and Radio Mirchi were informative and exhilarating for the students.

Each participant received a certificate on completion of the training. Speaking at the closing ceremony, head of outreach programs and impact at Avtar Human Capital Trust Eswar Balasubramanian, and lead (strategic initiatives), Intel India, Amit Chatterjee emphasized the power of intent, building personality and decision-making skills, acquiring domain skills and standing up for choices made.
