BENGALURU: After students from two top private engineering colleges in the city walked away with half a crore packages in campus placement, it’s the turn of students from the state-run University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) to land eye-popping offers.
Computer science students Abhishek Rai and Yash Kothari have bagged an annual package of about Rs 49.8 lakh each for openings in the Bengaluru office of a multi-national software company.

Abhishek, an alumnus of Kendriya Vidyalaya ASC Centre and son of an IAF employee-turned banker, always loved computers and was a regular at coding competitions and hackathons. “I was expecting an offer from a good company, but this was a cherry on the cake. Since my family is from the defence background, we are not used to such hefty pay packages. And with our roots in Bihar, the inclination is always towards government jobs. But my family is so happy with this,” he said.
Yash, whose family hails from Rajasthan, studied at Cathedral High School and St Joseph’s PU College in Bengaluru before getting into UVCE. “I used to stay away from computer science thinking it was a difficult subject. But once in college, I started loving it and I will not stop learning it. I did not have any pressure during the selection process for this company. I just wanted to know how good I am at it,” said the son of a businessman and a homemaker.
We can bring out excellence: VC
“While this is the first time we have had such a package, I am not surprised. The college is even older than IITs and is capable of bringing out excellence,” said Venugopal KR, vice-chancellor, Bangalore University, under which the college falls.
