Traffic cop clears gravel stones from KIA Rd
Bengaluru: A traffic constable’s spontaneous act of removing loose gravel stones scattered on the flyover in front of BDA office on Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) Road has earned him immense appreciation from citizens. While the constable earned plaudits, citizens were unsparing of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for failing to keep the roads safe and tidy.A constable attached to Sadashivanagar traffic police station, whose identity has not been revealed, noticed gravel stones strewn all along the BDA flyover. This was soon after a tipper carrying construction material had crossed the stretch. The constable sensed potential danger and started looking for ways to clear the stones. Soon, he noticed a few labourers passing by. He borrowed a hand hoe from them and, along with two other labourers, instantly began clearing the gravel stones dotting the road. Sadashivanagar traffic police shared a video of the incident on Twitter and the post soon went viral. Suman D Pannekar, DCP, traffic (west), lauded the constable’s prompt action. Citizens too joined the top officials in expressing their appreciation for the proactive cop. “Very good work by the city (traffic) police. We hope that bikers can now travel safely and utilize the roads responsibly,” tweeted a netizen. “We really appreciate and salute the cop’s concern and precautionary measures taken,” wrote another.Madhusudhan, police inspector, Sadashivanagar traffic police station, told TOI that in less than a few minutes, the road was cleared. He, however, refused to name the constable. “The size (small) of the stones posed potential danger. They could easily go unnoticed, leading to hazardous accidents. It did not take very long for the cop to clear the stretch. Tippers that carry construction material along the stretch are responsible for spillage of gravel stones and concrete leftovers.” A few people demanded that traffic police trace the errant vehicles and fine them for littering the roads. A few other netizens questioned BBMP officials on why their personnel weren’t seen clearing the road. “There is a monsoon team in every area deployed by the BBMP. Where are they? Why are you not using their services?” asked a Twitter user. — Deepanka HS & Shivika Kumar
