Thundershowers in Bengaluru for next 48 hours: IMD

BENGALURU: India Meteorological Department issued a forecast of thunderstorms and heavy rain over Bengaluru for the next two days.

Bengaluru city, according to IMD, witnessed 60.5mm of rainfall on Wednesday night and in the wee hours of Thursday, based on data from the observatory on Palace Road. However, statistics from Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre revealed the highest rainfall was recorded in Hampi Nagar ward (85.5mm).

The city could get a brief respite next week due to a low-pressure area over Bay of Bengal, which could develop into a deep depression and intensify into a cyclonic storm moving towards the coast of West Bengal.

"The low-pressure area and subsequent depression system over the Bay of Bengal region would draw all the moisture content from the peninsular area, leaving it dry for a few days. If the cyclonic storm veers towards Andhra Pradesh or Tamil Nadu coast, then Karnataka will get rain.

However, as it is seen moving towards West Bengal and Bangladesh, the peninsular region is likely to witness dry weather barring one or two spells of isolated rainfall," Prasad, a meteorologist at IMD Bengaluru, explained.

While the daily forecast on Wednesday revealed moderate rain, parts of south and east Bengaluru saw heavy rain. "While it was very heavy in Hampi Nagar ward and Jnanabharathi campus, it was moderate in other parts with light showers in Yelahanka region," said a scientist from KSNDMC.
